Lae and Bijan come to an open shed with a slanted roof at the edge of the village. Inside are pots, firewood, walking sticks, and other various supplies. Bijan: TAKE ANY SUPPLIES YOU NEED AND LEAVE QUICKLY. The older man takes a few logs from the shed. As he walks away, he sees Lae come out of the jungle and approach the shed out of the corner of his eye. Bijan thinks: LAE, YOUR PARENTS WOULD BE PROUD. SPIRITS PROTECT YOU. He climbs the hill to his hut. There are colorful ribbons hanging over his door to help it stand out to visitors. Inside there are dozens of birdcages with many colorful birds. Bijan puts his logs in the brazier in the center of the room. A trail of smoke begins to raise. SFX: KLNK KNK Gently, Bijan pulls first a pink and then a green bird from their cages. Bijan thinks: I HOPE YOU'RE STILL ALIVE, DEAR FRIEND. The green bird has a long blue tail. He releases the birds and they fly out of the smoke hole at the top of the hut. Bijan thinks: FLY HOME. SFX: FWP FWP The green bird flies one direction and the pink one flies another.

I had a wonderful time at the Stumptown Comic Fest meeting all sorts of talented people including Dylan Meconis of Family Man, Meredith Gran of Octopus Pie, and David McGuire of Gastrophobia. All are very inspiring cartoonists for me.

But look forward to hearing more about Stumptown later, because right now I want to show off the new papercraft models on the Extras page and in our Facebook gallery. Now there are a new levels of difficulty for people to challenge themselves with.

      The birds were fun to design. Bijan has to work hard to take care of so many feathered companions but it's worth it to him.
