Stumptown Comics Fest was pretty fun! Everyone keeps telling me there's a big comic community here in Portland but I didn't really see it until this last weekend. There were a ton of zines and small press works. but not as many webcartoonists as I expected. I really should have gone to that Webcomics Weekend last month.
I subjected myself to four portfolio reviews over two days and got some good (and some bland) advice. It was definitely more beneficial to have other artists critique my work. Steve Lieber said I need to love the setting of my comic as much as my characters. And Joƫlle Jones suggested varying the sizes of the characters on the page more. I will definitely work on those ideas. The editors I talked to couldn't really pinpoint specific things for me to work on and tended towards really generic encouragement. "Keep drawing everyday!" "Take a life drawing course!" The keep-drawing-everyday line feels like such a cop out. Do they think I plan to quit drawing tomorrow? Very strange. Their efforts are appreciated but I will avoid editor critiques for now.
You've probably already noticed but SSGrapes now has an archive page. Thank you, Andrew! It's nothing fancy but should make browsing previous pages easier. It also makes it clear just how pitifully few pages I have so far... I have to keep drawing everyday! XD
