Sweet and Sour Grapes is about a jungle guardian who finds her strongest ally in a dead engineer from an ancient civilization.
The jungle often warps outsiders into half-beasts. Only people born in its strange miasma can traverse it safely. Despite this risk, every young Tashoni spends two nights in this wilderness as a rite of passage. The origins of the jungle and its sometimes blessed, sometimes cruel tradition are a mystery to everyone living. But mixing the knowledge of the dead with the resources of the living may reveal its secret...
This graphic novel contains some violence and nudity. Parental guidance suggested. I update with a new page every Monday.

I first became interested in comics in high school when a friend showed me a translation of the Japanese manga, Magic Knight Rayearth. Soon after I was prowling import book stores and studying Japanese. In college I became a fan of online comics like Bill Holbrook's Kevin and Kell and RPG World by Ian Jones-Quartey. The accessibility and freedom of webcomics really appealed to me and I centered my senior project on launching Sweet and Sour Grapes.
Unfortunately for SSGrapes my other passion, Japan, commanded my attention after graduation. For three years I taught English to school children in the Japanese country-side with the JET Program. You can see original teaching materials I drew on my English Illustrations sub-site.
It was amazing abroad but I wanted to get back to comics. So returning to Portland, I relaunched Sweet and Sour Grapes with a fresh script and significantly improved art. My current ambition is to tell this story as best I can and become a better comics author. Thankfully my family and pet rats keep me from becoming overly self-absorbed in this task.
